Tagged and Ticked

I opened my Facebook yesterday to a horrifying sight. Someone tagged a picture of me, making it show up on my wall, and thus visible to the 700+ people who are on my friend list.

It wasn't even a recent picture. In fact, it was from when I was a teenager. Back then, I lived a life much different than how I live now. Let's just say I loved to party. The picture captured me in the full throes of a major party. It was not something I wanted most of my friends list to see; not my former students, not my boss and colleagues, not my pastor, and especially not my mother. I quickly untagged it, wishing that old friends couldn't pop back into your life with such disregard for your feelings. I felt somehow violated.

Also yesterday, I received the first photos from a session Teenaged Daughter had with a photographer friend of mine in a nearby city. I thought and still think they are very nice. Here they are:

I added them to my Facebook and tagged them back to her so she could have record of them, too. Almost as soon as I hit Done Tagging, I heard her feet zipping down the hall towards me. "Untag me! Untag me!", she said urgently, a stricken look on her face.

I was baffled. "Why?"

"I don't want my friends seeing me acting like I think I'm a model! It's so embarrassing!"

Reluctantly, I untagged her. I shook my head little, trying to figure it out.

But, in the long run, I guess we all want a little control over our images and how they're displayed, whether they are ancient ones from our past or attractive ones from our present.

What do you think about tagging in this heyday of social media?

  1. I didn't like it when people put pictures on my facebook without asking. My daughter had a picture put on her page that was just horrible by someone in her office. She was hurt.

  2. Personally I got so fed up with the nonsense on facebook and deactivated my account so I don't even think about it any more. You can share with your daughter that Odie in NC thinks she is a beautiful young woman.

  3. Belle: I think there should be a control on what you can and can't put up about others. It's just not right. I feel for your daughter- I hope it didn't cause her more problems after that.

Odie: I think you might have the right idea. FB is almost more trouble than it's worth. And, thank you!

  4. Tagging is scary. I live in constant fear. :)

  5. You're daughter is adorable. If I were her, I'd want to be tagged.

  6. Crystal: It's like an ancient dinosaur being resurrected. Sometimes the past needs to stay in the past!

Missed Periods: Thank you- I think so, too, but the mind of a teenager these days is almost incomprehensible!
