I Am a Weirdo

And I say it with restrained pride. My friend Pearl likes to say, "Everyone is someone's weirdo." (If you click on her name, you can be instantly transported over to her hilarious weirdness post.) I may be a little weirder than most, though.

1. I unconsciously pick up into my own speech patterns the accents and verbal nuances of whomever I am talking with. Like conversational Silly Putty, I will lift your speech patterns and make them mine if we ever talk. And I don't even realize I'm doing it until it's too late.

2. In the locker room of my gym, I don't touch anything with my bare hands. Although it is a very clean, new locker room, I must use a paper towel to directly touch any handle or surface in there (or any locker room).

3. Bulls, large horses, and various wild animals don't bother me at all in close vicinity. However, should I spot a roach or mouse,  I will break any land speed record and leave my dignity in the dust. Just be sure to get out of my way.

4. I take my own pillow when we stay in hotels. I just can't sleep if I don't have it.

5. I like to leave little notes inside books in libraries and books stores for others to find. Just for the fun of it.

6. I talk with animals in what I imagine to be their language. That means I meow with cats, woof with dogs, moo with cattle, and whinny with horses. I even squeal with guinea pigs. And usually they talk back to me.

7. Even though I have read Where the Red Fern Grows with my students each year for 29 years and know it well enough to have large chunks of it memorized, I still cry at the end.

8. I like to dance, and much to the horror of my 16 year old daughter, if a good song comes on in the mall or grocery store, I will bust a move.

9. Even the thought of ingesting shrimp, coffee (which I've never tasted), or bananas absolutely makes my stomach turn.

10. I can and have spoken in front of a couple of thousand people without nervousness, but sometimes talking on the phone with someone I don't know makes me tremble.

'Fess up. What makes you a weirdo?

  1. I love your "weirdoness" (I bet that won't go through spell checking, LOL) I think it makes you, you! And at the gym it is a good thing to have a paper towel handy and not touch anything with our bare hands, especially with how bad the flu is this season. I can't imagine going through life without coffee :)

    have a good day!

  2. I am like you with #1 and #4. Especially #4. If I don't have my own pillow I end up with headaches and aches in all kinds of random places. I also have one of those body pillows. Not always convenient. Sometimes I have to buy one to use while I'm on the trip, and then just leave it. I love your #5 and would love to find one of your notes. I imagine that inanimate objects have feelings (i.e. cars, Kindles, etc) and I'm very careful to talk nicely to them and tell them what a good job they're doing. Karma. And I always talk lovingly to my flowers and plants because I just KNOW that they have feelings. I'm usually pretty good with people, but when they have the ability to talk back, sometimes there are problems.

Oh, snap. I just went back and read the comments and this makes it look as though I am mimicking karen. But wait! That makes three of us on these items, so they aren't weird after all, no?

  5. Hi, Shelly and Pearl! After decades of struggling to be normal I decided to stop fighting it and embraced my weirdness. Pearl, don't feel badly about your colorful remark. I have put my foot in my mouth more times than I can count. Shelly, I practice your #1 all the time. It's part of the matching and mirroring technique used to establish and maintain rapport. I also do #6 which again, is a method of building rapport, only this time with animals. (Animals are people, too!) I suppose I am weird by virtue of the fact that I enjoy my own company more than that of any other person. I love to entertain myself with my own thought processes and inside jokes. I always get them! Thank you Shelly and Pearl for more another round of smiles and laughs today!

  6. Yep, it's official - you're definitely a weirdo!! LOL!! I love number 5 - what a good idea! I think to touch things in the locker room whilst holding a tissue is probably an excellent idea. I'm not sure that this British person's accent sounds refined and dignified!! Put it this way, as I say the word it would come across as refained!! (That's quite posh, isn't it?!). Fun post my friend.

  7. I don't share any of the weirdness you mentioned, though #8 is close. I don't sing in public, but you can bet that if I hear a word or phrase that is part of a song and if I'm in a good mood, I am going to sing the song.

Another weird thing is re-checking an envelope or a card that I've put gift money or a gift check in... like, 10 seconds after I put it in.

I'm sure I'll think of many other weird things about myself as the day goes on.

  19. Shelly,
While my weirdness is pretty evident for the whole world to see, I will confess that you are the first person I have ever run into that shares Item #1 with me. I have sometimes wondered whether the other person thought I was trying to mimic them, when I realized what I was doing. But it was entirely subconscious.

On just our third day in Italy, a sales clerk said to me, "Nice accent" - regarding my six word Italian vocabulary. I think spoken words must go directly into our neurons, don't you?

The rest of my own list is too weird for public consumption. :)

I guess the weirdest thing about me is leaving nouns out of sentences when talking with someone I know well. This is what my sister says I do. I'm in mid-thought about something and start talking about it to her without context. She has to ask me what on earth I'm talking about. "Give me some nouns," she says. I would think it was horribly weird except that now she is doing it to me!

  25. I love your honesty and prefer to refer to these things as quirks!

I do a variation of #1 - instead of accents, I change my vocabulary and grammar to match the other person's.

Other quirks? I swallow my gum. I am a pack-a-day gum chewer/swallower :) I'm trying to cut back, honest. And I used to skip to the end of a book to find out how it resolves, especially if the suspense is unbearable, then go back and pick up where I left off. I've gotten better at resisting that, but I often still read the newspaper back to front. And, the last one I'll admit to (but not the last I have) is that I am wound very tightly about getting an even haircut - I so dread getting home to find one side longer than the other.

Maybe these are beyond quirks and all the way to weirdness after all :)

  46. I love your list. I am right with when it comes to large animals, not afraid of them, but if I see a mouse I would be running right along side of you.

  49. I believe that everyone is weird to some degree. Don't worry about it.

  52. I've filled my library with old, hard-backed books. Once I bought a whole stack at a flea market without flipping through them--found $1000 tucked inside one of them! I think a note from you would be just as nice. :) (I've also found post cards, love letters, and black and white pictures)

I eat a hardboiled egg for first breakfast every. single. morning. (and yes, that means I eat two--but I wake up so hungry if I don't eat something right away I will start crying!)

    I only use black pens.

    1. Chantel: $1,000?!! Wow! And I'm like you. I love old hard backed books, especially old text books. I've even got some from the mid 1800's. Amazing how things have changed in education.

I love first breakfast- that is going to have me smiling the rest of the day!

  53. None of it sounds scary weird. Well, maybe your opinion on bananas, shrimp and coffee is weird. But maybe that's just because I love all three. I had a banana for breakfast, shrimp Pho for dinner and a cup of coffee for desert.
I'd say that some people might think I'm weird for a lot of reasons, but I just do what I want and have fun doing it. My wife is the same way. I'm going to have to think about it...

    1. Pat: Ha! My husband and kids love shrimp, and so they are kind of glad I don't like it since it leaves more for them. To do what you want and have fun doing it is a great life philosophy~

  54. I have a pillow I can't sleep without either. It's one of those memory foam gel ones and must weight twenty pounds but it's so great on my neck I can't sleep on anything else. LOVE.
